Privacy Policy

CaptureQuest is designed to help people document nearby nature while keeping personal photographs and precise locations under their control. This policy explains the information used by the mobile app, public website, teacher tools, and organization mission program.

Three ways an explorer can begin

An explorer may use CaptureQuest as a guest, join an adult-led class or family field crew, or sign in to use supported sync features. Guest discoveries generally stay on that device and may be lost when the app or its local data is removed.

Information you choose to provide

Depending on the features used, this may include an adult account email, explorer display name, role, photographs, field notes, optional location, QuestDex entries, mission and challenge progress, XP or achievement summaries, class or family group membership, organization information, and support or partner inquiries.

Camera, photos, and location

Camera and photo-library access are used only after device permission. Location starts Off. When available, an explorer may choose no location, an approximate area, or an exact-private pin for a saved discovery. Private photos and exact coordinates are excluded from teacher dashboards, organization reporting, and exported share cards.

Online identification

When an explorer requests online identification, a resized image and request information are sent through the CaptureQuest service to Google’s Gemini API to generate an educational suggestion. The CaptureQuest application server does not intentionally save that identification-request image after returning the response. A separate copy may be saved on the device or to private cloud photo backup only when the explorer chooses a save or backup feature. CaptureQuest does not use private explorer photographs to build a public training-photo collection.

Accounts, sync, and service providers

CaptureQuest uses service providers to operate specific features. Supabase supports account authentication, permitted app data, private photo backup, and group summaries. Google Gemini supports online identification suggestions. Resend supports transactional partner-inquiry email. Railway and website hosting providers deliver application and website services. These providers process information only for the services configured by CaptureQuest and under their applicable terms and security controls.

What teachers and field crews can see

Authorized group organizers may see a field crew’s name and join code, participating explorer display names and roles, the active quest, and summary progress such as species and completed quests. The teacher dashboard does not provide student photographs or exact sighting coordinates. A group code should be treated as private and shared only with the intended group.

What organization partners can see

Approved venue partners receive aggregate mission information such as anonymous mission starts, counts for approved targets, full-mission completions, and aggregate return activity when enabled. Partners do not receive explorer photos, personal profiles, names, or exact child coordinates through Partner Studio.

Sharing

An explorer may choose to export a discovery, badge, or mission-achievement card to another app. Sharing is initiated by the user. Share cards are designed to omit exact private coordinates, but the receiving app’s own terms and privacy practices apply after content is shared.

Children and adult supervision

CaptureQuest is intended for use with appropriate parent, guardian, educator, or youth-leader supervision. It does not intentionally provide a public child profile, public photo feed, or public precise-location feed. Adults should use approved group access, avoid putting sensitive information in display names or notes, and contact CaptureQuest if they believe a child’s information was provided inappropriately.

Partner inquiries and website messages

A partner inquiry includes the organization and adult contact information entered into the form. It is stored so CaptureQuest can review and respond to the request, and a transactional confirmation may be sent to the provided work email. Do not submit child information, private explorer photos, passwords, or precise child locations in an inquiry.

Sale, advertising, and public profiles

CaptureQuest does not sell personal information, does not provide private explorer photographs or exact child coordinates to organization partners, and does not use children’s personal information for targeted advertising. CaptureQuest may use general service-performance and security information to operate, protect, and improve the service.

Retention, access, and deletion

Information is kept only as needed to provide the selected feature, maintain security and required records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Account holders may request access, correction, or deletion. The in-app account-deletion service removes the authenticated account and private cloud photo-backup objects associated with it; some limited operational, security, transaction, or legal records may be retained when required. Removing the app does not by itself submit a cloud-account deletion request.

Security and changes

CaptureQuest uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. Features and providers may change as the service develops. Material updates will be reflected by revising the date on this page and, when appropriate, by providing an additional notice.
